Acer Aspire One

I promise my friend to reinstall the OS system because of some failure made by him. It isn't bootable anymore.
I don't have an external CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive now, so can't use the bootable CD to install the system. What I have now is a USB stick, with some tools inside, it's a nightmare since then.

After several boots by USB stick, the Aspire One was broken...
Pushed the power button, the power LED is on, but the screen only showed me a black screen, there is no response....

It's a serious issue by Acer and really scared me.

Fortunately I found an article by Macles, the problem was fixed within 2 minutes.

Acer Aspire One BIOS Recovery

The AA1 has a built-in BIOS recovery routine, making it possible to flash the BIOS even if the system doesn't boot anymore. It's only meant for emergencies and may void your warranty, so use at your own risk.

Follow every step carefully!

First format an USB stick with FAT.

Download the latest BIOS, and put both FLASHIT.EXE and the BIOS file in the root directory of the stick. Rename the BIOS file to ZG5IA32.FD, that's important. Do not remove the USB stick.

Turn the AA1 off, make sure both battery and AC adapter are connected. Press Fn+Esc, keep it pressed and press the power button to turn the AA1 on. Release Fn+Esc after a few seconds, the power button will be blinking. Press the power button once. The AA1 will now initiate the BIOS flash, do not interrupt it under any circumstances. After a while the power button will stop blinking, and the AA1 will reboot shortly after. Wait patiently.

The BIOS has been flashed and all settings reset to default.

If for some reason you made a mistake during the procedure and it doesn't reboot by itself wait 5 minutes before turning it off, just to be safe that it isn't still flashing the BIOS.

It's really special, I would never think of this kind of application. There are so many different variations if a notebook owns two screen.



The author introduces four type of modes.

1. Tablet mode. Snap the laptop open and flat, and the two screens work together as one giant touch screen.

2. Laptop mode. Open the virtual keyboard, which appears full-size on the bottom touch screen, and use like a regular clamshell laptop.

3. Book mode. Open an e-Book and hold it sideways like an open book. One page appears on the left screen and the next page appears on the right. Touch the corner to turn the page.

4. Two-person mode. Open it flat again like Tablet mode, but click a button to make one screen orient itself for one user and the other toward you.

Wake up on LAN in Linux system

The raw materials are raising higher, a PC running 24 hours that can be used to remote control wastes too much electricity. With WOLfeature, we can inform the computer up only when we want to use it.

1. OS dependent

My server is built up by Shuttle XPC sk22g, as I know, most WOL feature can be configured via BIOS. Indeed, I found a wake up feature for the PCI card, but I used the onboard LAN chip. After asking the consultant, they said no setting in the BIOS, the WOL feature should be set by the software in the OS.

I had multi-systems in the server, Debian and Windows XP, in XP I can enable the WOL easily by the LAN driver. Sending the magic packet to it can really trigger to system up. But whenever I switch to the Linux system and power off the system, magic packet won't take effect.

I know that there is also a similar way to configure the NIC. Indeed, there is a ethernet tool called ethtool that can do this. Enable the WOL by "ethtool -s eth0 wol g" Now, your system has the ability the process the magic packet.


2. How to send magic packet

There are many applications either on windows or UNIX.

Wakeonlan is a very easy-to-use program in Linux, compile it, then run this "wakeonlan -i your.domain.name 00:13:49:XX:YY:ZZ", "00:13:49:XX:YY:ZZ" is the MAC address of your PC you want to wake up.


3. The PC is behind a router

Your router must support the port forward feature, try to forward UDP packet in port 9 to the PC you want to wake up.


4. After shutdown, it still not works

Try to check the halt script if it try to disable the network interface.
Below is my halt script in /etc/init.d/halt
