Heard of these before. What usually happens is gas, like CO2 trapped deep underground, finally gets released under considerable pressure, and due to the gas seeking the easiest path out from underground, it finds where the sand is, and blows it skyward on the surface. They think the same phenomenon happening in water is why ships dissapear in the Burmuda Triangle. Ships don't float in giant bubbles!
